Claude C. Hopkins (1866-1932) was one of the great pioneers of advertising, believed that advertising existed only to sell something and should be measurable and justify the results it has produced.
He has worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company and Dr. Shoop’s patent medicine company. At the age of 41, was hired by Albert Lasker owner of Lord & Thomas advertising in 1907 with a salary of $185,000 per year, Hopkins insisted copywriter researched their client products and produce reason-why copy. He believed that a good product was often his best seller and as such was a big supporter of sampling.
To keep track of the results of his advertising he used coded key coupons and then tested titles, offers and propositions against each other. He used the analysis of these measurements to continuously improve his advertising results, driving the responses and cost effectiveness of his customers ‘ advertising spending.
His classic book, “Scientific Advertising”, was published in 1923, after his retirement from Lord & Thomas, where he ended his career as president and President. He died in 1932.
