Claude K. Hopkins (1866-1932) was one of the great pioneers of advertising, he believed that advertising exists only to sell something and must be measurable and justify the results it produces.
He has worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company, and Dr. Shoop’s patent medicine company. At the age of 41, he was hired by Albert Lasker, owner of Lord & Thomas Advertising in 1907 with a salary of $ 185,000 a year, Hopkins insisted that copywriters research their clients’ products and make reasonable copies. He believed that a good product is often the best seller in its own right, and therefore he was a big proponent of sampling.
To track the results of his ads, he used key coded coupons and then tested headlines, offers, and offers against each other. He used the analysis of these measurements to continually improve his ad results, drive response, and cost-benefit his clients’ ad spend.
His classic book, Science Advertising, was published in 1923, following his departure from Lord & Thomas, where he ended his career as President and Chairman. He died in 1932.
