The main emphasis of training with an edged weapon is to know and understand all the dangers associated with this type of weapon.
All the “What ifs” and “Yes, buts” are all great for trial and error, and assuming predictability.
The serious danger from edge weapons is real and must be treated as such.
This means where you should establish your training priority to be a survival tool, in case this situation happens to you.
Let’s face it, you’re the one who has to survive, not your trainer, it helps you train your goals, not your goal.
The training priorities I use in Latosa-Escrima are the following: reality, technique and exercises.
Reality: This is understanding exactly what could happen and the dangers when using or going against an edged weapon.
Techniques: These moves are trying to give you a generalization of possibilities and probabilities of what might happen.
Drills: Most of the drills are used to develop and improve the body movement skills used in applying the technique.
The emphasis of this Edged Weapons Training is the proper placement and prioritization of how to build up to such a situation.
The technique doesn’t give you the skills to handle an edged weapon, it just gives you a scenario of how it might work.
Do not confuse exercises and techniques as the system, they are just tools to develop your skills.
The reality is having a partner attack you, safely of course, with attacks from very close and very far, different speeds and power, from the side and from invisible areas that are not in your peripheral vision.
Of course, there are other, more advanced training concepts and methods, but first we understand the basic thought process and where techniques and exercises are placed on your priority list.
Languages included in the video download format: English, Spanish, Italian.
