Out of the most Combatives or Reality-based systems available, the most overlooked aspect in martial arts, combat sports, and major self-defense systems concerns the mental aspect of any potentially violent confrontation. The two main areas within this context relate fearing Control and the cultivation of a Combat mentality or mindset.
The first part of this Combat Psychology series deals with the subject of controlling fear. Most importantly, understand the difference between fear, which is an anticipation of an unknown outcome, and the natural bio-chemistry of adrenaline, along with all its associated effects.
Knowledge dispels the fear of the unknown, and this instructional talk will present proven methods designed to educate the viewer through knowledge and understanding of the adrenal response – which in turn will put you on the path to developing a strategy for managing it. Understanding must follow the exposition if any degree of desensitization is to be gained. Here, we look at ways in which we can employ structured simulation and exercise scenarios designed to elicit the adrenal response, along with some of its associated effects on the mind and body.
Part One sets the stage for an even more in-depth look in Part Two, at accessing and controlling some of our most intense emotions. This DVD and others in the series will benefit anyone interested in managing stress related to violent confrontation.
This is the first in a series, the next part being on State access and management. The disc is mainly about recognizing the effects of adrenaline and preparing yourself mentally to give the exponent the best chance of using the adrenal response positively, not being used by it.
Much of the DVD is given over to a very comprehensive explanation of the effects of adrenal stress, with more symptoms gone than any other source (to my knowledge). This explanation in detail goes into the adrenal process starting with the parts of the brain that recognize danger, the effects of an increased heart rate, the release of chemical cocktails, the bodily systems shut down by the adrenal response to prepare for danger, and the Final symptoms brought on by all this. There is a simple scenario training exercise shown which gives a flavor of the broader training in this area that can be done.
The last ten minutes of the DVD is Lee’s explanation of Geoff’s fear map which breaks down the pre-fight/fight-in/post-fight types of fear very elegantly. Geoff Thompson is credited several times throughout the DVD, and this builds on his work exceptionally well.
I’m familiar with the other literature on the subject and this one is the best in my opinion; Lee’s presentation is as fluid and precise as ever. Those who prefer their material in DVD format over books will benefit from this release as there are no other DVDs covering this material.
